"Taffy" 一詞可能合併自威爾斯人的常用名「 Dafydd 」和威爾斯河流塔夫河（英語：River Taff）（威爾斯首都卡迪夫的母親河），其在18世紀中葉便已開始使用。 ^[3]這首童謠可能與 1744 年左右在倫敦出版的《拇指湯米的動聽歌集（英語：Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Book）》中的一首童謠有關，歌詞如下：

Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a thief;
塔菲是威爾斯人，塔菲是小偷；
Taffy came to my house and stole a piece of beef;
