9月20日的抗議活動很可能是世界歷史上最大的氣候罷課[7]。全世界有超過400萬人參加了罷課[8]，其中包括140萬德國罷課的參與者[9]。約300000抗議者參加了澳大利亞的罷課[10]，另外還有300000人參加了英國的抗議活動[11]，而紐約的抗議者則約有250000人。來自40個國家和地區的2000多名科學家承諾支持罷課[12]。
背景
這次罷課是學校氣候變化罷工的第三次全球性罷課。2019年3月的第一次罷課有150多個國家的160萬參與者[2]。第二次會議定於2019年5月舉行，正好與2019年歐洲議會選舉同時舉行， 由150個國家的1600個活動組成[13][14][15][16]。 第三次全球罷課計劃主要在9月20日至27日舉行。它們被安排在聯合國青年氣候峰會（9月21日）和2019年聯合國氣候行動峰會（9月23日）前後舉行 [1]。9月27日也是1962年出版的寂靜的春天發行的周年紀念日[1]。
