Nuphar shimadai[1], commonly known as yellow water lily, is a species of flowering plant in the family Nymphaeaceae, an endemic speciesn of Taiwan. The species is a kind of aquatic plants, which can be found in ponds or lakes. It is a perennial floating-leaved herb.The conservation status of Nuphar shimadai is critically endangered[2].

Specific character

  • Roots
    Nuphar shimadai has stout and branched rhizomes.
  • Leaves
    Leaves of Nuphar shimadai are broadly ovate, 8-12 cm long, 7-9 cm wide, with a rounded tip and a v-shaped notching base. Margin of leaves are entire. Smooth above while shaggy beneath. Depending on the depth of water, Nuphar shimadai have long petioles on the floating leaves.
  • Flowers
    Nuphar shimadai has yellow flowers in the whole year, with straight pedicel raising the flower above the water. There are 5 ovate sepals, many petals and numerous stamens on the flower. The ovary is spherical and the stigma is red.
  • Fruits
    The fruit of Nuphar shimadai is spherical.

Locality

Nuphar shimadai can only be found in Taiwan. Few ponds in Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Nantou (Chichi) , and Yilan (Fushan) have records of discovery.[3]
