Flourine
Flourine is a halogen. Its symbol is F and its atomic number is 9.
Flourine has a voracious chemical nature. It is pale yellow in color. It exists normally as F2. It is the most electronegative element. It is also the strongest oxidizer. It is capable of forming compounds at room temperature with very many substances.
The word flourine comes from the Latin word fluere, meaning flow. The name was chosen because the element was used to help molten metals flow. Henri Moissan successfully isolated Flourine in 1886.
Uses
Flourine's uses include:
- The manufacture of HF: hydrofluoric acid.
- The manufacture of plastic cement.
- Sodium Flouride is used as an insecticide.
- Flouride compounds of tin (Stannous Flouride) and antimony are added to toothpaste and drinking water to help defend against dental caries, or cavities.
- Flourine gas is used to frost glass.
- Uranium Hexaflouride (UF6) is an important production cusp in the manufacture of enriched uranium.
- Flourine is present in Teflon.
- Flourine is present in Freon.
