剧情
2002年，纳盖科伊尔的17岁男孩巴瓦尼目睹家人被父亲的竞争对手谋杀。他被迫承担责任，被关进少年辅育院并遭受虐待。结果，他养成了冷酷无情、傲慢的性格。几年后，巴瓦尼被放出来，成为卡车和贸易业务的负责人。巴瓦尼成为令人畏惧的帮派分子，并强迫拘留所的囚犯为自己顶罪。势力逐渐庞大后，巴瓦尼杀死了父亲的对手。
2019年，JD是金奈一所大学的教授，凭借善待学生的态度而深受他们喜爱，但受到同事的强烈厌恶，并长期深陷酗酒习惯之中。大学新聘的讲师查鲁拉妲·“查鲁”·普拉莎是唯一同情JD的人。JD决定维持学生选举，并承担了责任。虽然选举起初获取了成功，但学校遭到了对结果不满的外来暴徒们攻击。JD为此动乱负责，被分配到少年辅育院教书三个月，监狱当局警告他此地毒品滥用且暴力猖獗。
兄弟档学生萨巴里和马尼坎丹被迫替刚杀死人的巴瓦尼顶罪，于是在JD睡觉时塞了一张纸条，并在当晚致电给他，但JD喝得烂醉而未接电话。巴瓦尼逮到了兄弟档并杀死了他们，第二天他们的尸体被发现挂在辅育院教室的天花板上。JD因谋杀罪被拘留；悲痛欲绝的查鲁责备JD的疏忽，并透露是自己为他报名了这份工作，相信他是唯一能够了解囚犯需求的老师。她透露自己是名非政府组织人员，正在调查该设施中发生的犯罪行为；兄弟俩拼命联系她寻求协助。在拘留期间，JD发现了兄弟俩的纸条，其中详细描述了辅育院内发生的可怕活动。JD伤心欲绝，殴打了巴瓦尼派去杀害他的暴徒，并致电给巴瓦尼，承诺让对方为男孩们的死付出代价。
JD戒酒后，慢慢控制了辅育院，并开始改造囚犯。他的行为遭到负责控制年幼孩子的成年囚犯达斯的反对。在年幼囚犯乌迪亚尔的透露下，JD发现巴瓦尼经常让囚犯承担他的罪行。他录制了包括乌迪亚尔在内，年轻囚犯讲述达斯在监狱中犯罪的影片。巴瓦尼的暴徒瞄准了查鲁，并从她身上取回了影片。乌迪亚尔透露，部分囚犯身上纹有泰米尔字母“ப”（Pa），得以从巴瓦尼的同伙那获得免费食物和毒品。
JD突袭了巴瓦尼的相关合作者并切断了设施内的毒品供应，更潜入巴瓦尼的藏身处，威胁对方及其手下，同时在不知情的情况下用圆珠笔挟持着巴瓦尼。巴瓦尼展开报复，杀死了JD的几名大学同学和学生，令JD悲恸不已。达斯绑架了大部分囚犯，打算将他们连同巴瓦尼的资产一起带出泰米尔纳德邦。在JD的朋友兼弓箭手瓦娜希的帮助下，JD击败了达斯的手下并救出了孩子们。然后，他与达斯对峙，提醒对方是巴瓦尼和辅育院犯罪之间的联系，巴瓦尼可能会将他灭口。达斯改变想法，并将JD及孩子们运送到巴瓦尼的肉品加工厂。
随后，JD的猜测验证，巴瓦尼打算杀了达斯，但达斯制伏了即将杀死自己的暴徒，而JD则与巴瓦尼对决。JD最终击败了巴瓦尼；巴瓦尼说服JD加入自己的政治之路，但JD杀死了对方，为萨巴里和马尼坎丹的死报仇。孩子们安全后，JD和达斯向警方自首。辅育院被政府关闭，囚犯依据年龄被送往其他拘留设施及州立监狱。JD、达斯和辅育院中的其他成年囚犯被送往另一所监狱，他们打算改造那里的囚犯。

主题及影响
影评人苏迪尔·斯里尼瓦桑（Sudhir Srinivasan）指出《麻辣教授》参考了数部电影：《无声交响曲》（1986年）、《爱情城堡》（1996年）、《7G彩虹殖民地》（2004年）、《永恒父爱》（2008年）和《梦幻青春》（2015年）等[32]。这些电影中的部分桥段与JD成为酒鬼的原因相似[33]。但在片中，有角色提及JD是塞尔瓦姆教授（Professar Selvam）的学生，正好与卡茂尔·哈桑在《我们的一员》（1994年）中饰演角色的同名同职业[34]，JD将他视为榜样，在失去导师后变得酗酒[11]。许多报导声称本片的灵感来自韩国电影《熔炉》（2011年）[35][36]，但编剧庞·帕蒂班（Pon Parthiban）表示本片取自真实故事，引用对象是自己熟悉的一个人[37]。维杰的角色及登场片段灵感源自《极盗车神》（2017年），其中宝贝（Baby，安索·艾格特饰演）一角沉溺于音乐之中，与JD在片中的举止相同[34][38]。JD的另一灵感来自克林特·伊斯特伍德在《无名客三部曲》中的角色，当中的主角不打算讲述自己的背景故事[34]。

洛克希，在接受南方电影伴侣网站的巴拉德瓦吉·兰甘采访时，证实本片与《我们的一员》的引用，以展现身为哈桑粉丝的自豪[42]斯里尼瓦桑借由电影《魔高一尺，道高一丈》（2015年），点出了维杰与西图帕堤的新黑色人物塑造，并表示：“本片不断在他们各自过的生活之间穿插，即使称不上有条不紊，但最终仍使两人狭路相逢。”[33]洛克希坦言，想完全按照自己的风格来拍《麻辣教授》，维杰对此表示同意，但考量到维杰的明星地位及价值，他在本片仍将自己和维杰的风格各占一半[31]。
制作
发展
2019年3月，有消息称，维杰继《球神比吉尔》（2019年）之后，将与莫汉·拉贾的下一部电影合作[43]。据2019年5月的报导，维杰也将与洛克希合作，制作维杰主演的第64部电影[44]。电影由泽维尔·布里托（Xavier Britto）制片；布里托也是维杰的亲戚，为他制作了均由维杰之父S·A·钱德拉塞卡执导的三部电影：《森图拉潘迪》（1993年）、《崇拜者》（1994年）及《德瓦》（1995年）。[45]据2019年5月22日的报导，洛克希已向维杰读本，对方将此剧本列为首要项目，并为本片提交了一份为期120天的通告单[46]。布里托2019年8月24日正式宣布此消息，洛克希执导的本片确认为维杰的第64部作[47][48]，并由布里托新成立的XB电影创作者（XB Film Creators）公司制作[49]。七幕制片室的拉利特·库马尔（Lalit Kumar）与维杰的经纪人贾格迪什·帕拉尼萨米（Jagadish Palaniswamy）共同制作了本片[50]。随着这一消息的发布，部分将参与本片的工作人员名单泄露[51]，如担任音乐总监的阿尼鲁德·拉维昌德，以及担任特技指导的席尔瓦；沙迪亚·苏利安和普洛明·拉杰分别担任摄影指导与剪辑师，此前他们曾合作过导演的前作《机关枪囚徒》（2019年）。[52]电影起初暂称为《指挥官64》（Thalapathy 64，意为维杰主演的第64部电影）[53]，正式片名《麻辣教授》（Master）2019年12月31日公开[54][55]。
选角
2019年9月，西图帕堤被媒体宣布将在片中饰演反派[56][57]。马拉维卡·莫汉南在10月被媒体宣布为女主角[58]，同时新增的演员包括桑塔努·巴吉雅贾和安东尼·瓦格希斯[59][60]，瓦格希斯将借此首次参演泰米尔电影[61]。瓦格希斯后来以日程安排为由退出，曾参演《机关枪囚徒》的阿俊·达斯取代之[62]。安德莉·杰雷米亚也在同月签约出演[63]。布里吉斯达·萨加和古莉·G·基尚随后加入演出阵容[28][12]。拉米亚·苏布拉曼尼安于本片的第二拍摄行程加入剧组[64]。其他演员包括纳萨尔[65]、桑吉夫、斯里纳特[66]、普雷姆·库马尔[26]、纳根德拉·普拉萨德[27]、马亨德兰等[26]。拉维娜·拉维为马拉维卡·莫汉南配音[67]。演员卡希尔之父凭借本片首次参演电影[68]。2021年1月，据报导，在西图帕堤最终确定出演本片前，纳尼和马德哈万曾与片方接洽扮演反派[69][70]。苏雷卡·瓦尼（Surekha Vani）也拍摄了几场戏，但其镜头皆未包含在最终剪辑中[71]。
拍摄
电影在2019年10月3日的供奉仪式后展开主要拍摄，演员和工作人员皆出席了活动[72]。10月4日，拉塔纳·库马尔在推特上发文称，自己正与洛克希共同撰写本片的剧本[73]。曾与洛克希合作《机关枪囚徒》的编剧庞·帕蒂班回归，与洛克希及库马尔共同撰写剧本[74]。电影的首趟拍摄行程在金奈展开，为期15天[75][76]。首趟拍摄行程完成后，剧组在德里安排了为期20天的拍摄[77]。维杰和剧组2019年11月前往德里进行二次拍摄[78]。剧组在什里·拉姆商学院北校区拍摄歌曲片段，片场侧拍照在网络上流传开来[79]。电影拍摄一度因德里的空气污染而暂缓[80][81]。在电影拍摄地的几张照片泄露后，剧组根据数字千年著作权法（DMCA）要求散布者将照片删除[82]。
德里行程结束后，剧组前往卡纳塔克邦希莫加县拍摄了维杰和西图帕堤的几场重头戏[83]。但剧组计划在此前回到金奈拍摄几场戏[84][85]。巴吉雅贾和西图帕提2019年12月前往希莫加[86][87]。艺术总监萨蒂什·库马尔（Satheesh Kumar）在受访时表示，拍摄过程中搭建了超过15座布景，其中包括泰米尔电影中首次使用的地铁列车布景[88]。剧组在内维利褐煤公司（NLC）拍摄西图帕提和维杰的打斗场面[89]。但拍摄因故被两次中断，一次是维杰2020年2月5日因涉嫌逃税问题被所得税官员传唤[90]，另一次是印度人民党2月7日在NLC前抗议[91]。本片2020年2月拍摄完成，历时129个工作天[92][93]。安德莉和维杰为了扮演片中的角色，都接受了射箭训练[94]。电影片尾字幕中，洛克希与库马尔客串演出的部分镜头由维杰执导，成为维杰出道以来首次尝试执导[95]。
后期制作
《麻辣教授》的后制工作2020年3月展开，即拍摄完成后不久，但受到印度的COVID-19屏蔽而暂停[96]。泰米尔纳德邦政府2020年5月批准本片恢复后制工作[97]，成为少数的复工电影之一。剧组表示，除2020年5月11日恢复剪辑工作外，包括配音在内的整体后制工作均在屏蔽前完成[98]。作曲家阿尼鲁德·拉维昌德在推特上声称，已展开本片的电影配乐工作[99]。
电影起初的最终剪辑的长度为181分钟[100]，2020年12月14日发送给中央电影认证委员会（CBFC）[101]。电影含有暴力及血腥镜头而被CBFC人员授予U/A认证[b][102][103][104]。片方2020年12月24日透过社交媒体发布推文正式披露了这项消息[105]。审查后，片长最终定为179分钟[1]。有报导称，电影的未审查版本将在数字版发布，当中包含少许院线版未有的镜头[106]。之后，数字媒体公司网站LetsOTT声称，本片的数字版不包含删减镜头，但该版本不会删除辱骂台词[107]。2021年2月，本片的一支四分钟删减镜头在网上发布[108][109]。
音乐
电影的原声专辑和背景音乐由拉维昌德编构，歌词由阿伦拉贾·卡马拉吉、加纳·巴拉坎德（Gana Balachandar）、阿里乌、维涅什·希万、维什努·埃达万（Vishnu Edavan）和比约恩·苏拉奥编写。专辑收录了八首曲目，其中三首单曲——《小故事》[110]、《老师登场》[111]及《老师突袭》（Vaathi Raid）[112]在电影上映前对外发表。电影音乐发表会2020年3月15日在金奈新德里里拉皇宫饭店举行，并透过太阳电视台现场直播[113]。虽然原声带的曲目已全部发表，但官方又发布了《老师卡巴迪》（Vaathi Kabaddi）及《教授专家》（Master the Blaster）这两首歌曲当作专辑扩展[114][115]。截至2021年4月，该原声带在所有音乐流平台上的播放量超过50亿次[116]。

院线
《麻辣教授》2021年1月13日在印度上映，即庞格尔节前一天[117]；泰米尔纳德邦放映戏院达1000多家[118]。电影原定2020年4月9日上映[119]，但随着首席部长埃达帕迪·K·帕拉尼斯瓦米为了遏制COVID-19疫情的传播，领导的泰米尔纳德邦政府宣布关闭戏院[120][121]，导致本片被无限延期[122]。导演、制片人和其他技术人员保证，“大银幕体验而生”的本片势必会在院线发行[123]。此期间有传言称，电影将于排灯节（2020年11月14日）上映，此前泰米尔纳德邦政府允许戏院在该节日前四天（即11月10日）重新开放，但并未实现[124]。本片的搁置导致维杰首次有一个年分内没有推出任何作品[125]。2020年11月28日，片方发表了一份新闻声明[126]，驳斥了在任何OTT媒体服务上发行《麻辣教授》的传言，重申电影仍选择院在线映[127]；电影业因疫情而遭受了前所未有的损失，此项决定对于行业的复兴至关重要[128][129]。
2020年12月，发行方正式宣布本片将于2021年1月13日上映[130][131]。此外，泰卢固语、卡纳达语和马拉雅拉姆语配音版本也将同步发行[132]。但唯独马拉雅拉姆语版本并未依据消息在院在线映。《麻辣教授》的泰卢固语版本在安得拉邦和特伦甘纳邦的600家戏院上映[133]。电影在喀拉拉邦的200家影院上映，成为当天重新开放后首部放映的片子[134][135]。喀拉拉邦电影商会（Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce，KFCC）与首席部长的会议顺利，当地戏院得以开放，但仍遵循COVID-19协议而产生部分限制，如整间影厅只能坐满一半人，且观众间需保持距离。但戏院业主提出的救济方案和免税都未被喀拉拉邦政府采纳，导致戏院的开放受阻。[136][137]但此前，中央政府允许在2020年10月中旬恢复开放戏院[138]。电影1月7日起在泰米尔纳德邦的限定戏院开放预售[139]；依据预售额，首映周末票房创下历史新高[140]。
因《麻辣教授》的配音版本在印度北部的需求[141]，制片方正式宣布发行印地语版本，命名为《维杰之麻辣教授》（Vijay The Master）[142][143]，排定2021年1月14日发行[144]，遍及北印度戏院[145]。泰米尔语、泰卢固语和印地语版本在印度中部、拉贾斯坦邦、德里、北方邦和旁遮普邦额外获得了500个大银幕[146]。受限COVID-19影响，本片未在英国和加拿大上映[147]。
发行商
《麻辣教授》的预发行业务包括院线、海外、卫星、数字、音乐和配音权，在COVID-19疫情之前以20亿卢比的价格出售[148][149]。临近影片上映时，则有消息传出本片的预发行业务交易达15.83亿卢比[2]。全球发行权由七幕制片室（Seven Screen Studio）获取[150][151]，负责将著作权出售给其区域级发行商：施里赛联合（Shri Sai Joints，蒂鲁内尔维利和科摩林角）、苏什玛电影艺术家（Sushma Cine Arts，马杜赖）、加大上限电影（Plus Max Films，蒂鲁吉拉伯利和坦贾武尔）、斯里拉杰电影（Sri Raj Films，塞勒姆）、坎萨萨米艺术电影发行商（Kanthasamy Arts Films Distributors，哥印拜陀）、5星森希尔（5 Star Senthil，北阿尔果德及南阿尔果德）、奉献影业（Dhanam Pictures，琴格阿尔帕图）、斯里卡帕卡甘尼萨电影回路（Sri Karpaga Vinayaga Film Circuits，金奈）[152]。普利特维拉·萨库马兰旗下的普利特维拉制片公司（Prithviraj Productions）购入了本片在喀拉拉邦的发行权[153]。迪拉吉企业（Dheeraj Enterprises）和（East Coast Productions）分别获得了卡纳塔克邦和安得拉邦-特伦甘纳邦地区的发行权[154][155]，印度联合出口商（United India Exporters）与马利克流（Malik Streams）则获取了海外著作权[156]。印地语和北印度发行权被出售给B4U电影公司（B4U Motion Pictures）[157]。Lotus Five Star购入了马来西亚和新加坡的经销权[158]。
营销
本片的首支预告片2020年11月14日在排灯节发表[159][160]，超过5000万次观看[161][162]，成为观看次数最多的预告片，也是最受欢迎的南印度电影预告片[163]；直到其记录被《科拉尔金矿2》 （2021年）的预告片打破，在发布24小时内观看次数超过7800万次[164]。《麻辣教授》的泰卢固语版本的预告片于2020年12月17日发表[165][166]，印地语版本的预告片《维杰之麻辣教授》于2021年1月7日发表[167]。
为了搭配宣传，宣传团队与推特合作，2021年1月1日元旦推出了新的表情符号[168][169]。2020年12月下旬，宣传团队与西莱雕塑（Silaii Sculptures）合作，成为电影官方商品的合作伙伴[170]，推出了根据维杰在片中造型的半身树脂雕像[171]。随后，Fully Filmy于2021年1月公开了《麻辣教授》的官方周边商品[172]。2021年1月8日，片方在海得拉巴举办了一场预发布活动，以宣传电影的泰卢固语版本[173]。
