FTO基因全称脂肪和肥胖相关基因(Fat mass and obesity-associated),在人类基因组中位于16号染色体,此基因编码的FTO蛋白属AlkB家族英语AlkB(即与细菌的AlkB蛋白同源[6][7]),为α-酮戊二酸依赖性羟化酶英语alpha-ketoglutarate-dependent hydroxylase[6]。此基因可能与肥胖症有关[8][9]。2011年何川实验室发现FTO蛋白可将mRNA上的N6-甲基腺苷(m6A)去甲基化成腺苷(A),为第一个被发现的mRNA去甲基酶[10][11]
