優降寧是不可逆、選擇性的單胺氧化酶抑制劑（MAO-A（英語：Monoamine oxidase A）和MAO-B（英語：Monoamine oxidase B）的IC₅₀分別為11.52 nM和8.20 nM）。^[1]^[2]1963年，它由雅培以抗高血壓藥的形式進入美國及英國市場，商品名Eutonyl。同樣於1960年代進入市場的單胺氧化酶抑制劑還有尼亞拉胺（英語：nialamide）、異卡波肼、苯乙肼（英語：phenelzine）、反苯環丙胺。^[3]^:146^[4]^:60^[5]^[6]優降寧於2007年被停用。^[7]它除了作為單胺氧化酶抑制劑，也會與單胺氧化酶的別構中心I₂咪唑啉受體（英語：Imidazoline receptor）結合。^[8]
