English: This thrilling portrayal shows the barque Sir Henry Pottinger during a cyclone in the Indian Ocean on 14 January 1848. The painting is both accurate and dramatic, with the moonlit rolling seas typical of Heard's style. The ship was returning from Calcutta when she encountered a storm off Ceylon. She lost her foremast, two upper sections of the main mast and the mizzen top mast, which covered the deck with a tangle of wreckage. The crew fought bravely to minimise damage, and the next day were able to use the salvaged remains to reconstruct the masts. At the same time they realised that the 14-year old apprentice had been lost. The barque SIR HENRY POTTINGER (1845), owned by the Brocklebank Line Ltd of Liverpool.[1] |
