Text Appearing Before Image: ZOARCID IN MONTEREY BAY 255 This unexpected capture stimulated efforts to obtain additional specimens for studies of morphology and natural history. This report contains new catch records, which extend the northern limit of the range; a description of the first seven specimens caught in Monterey Bay; a summary of additional catches of Maynea californica during the spring of 1973; and notes on the natural history of this fish. METHODS Our first collection of seven specimens of Maynea californica was made by accidentally snagging a clump of drift eelgrass, in a 100-m (330-ft) gill net (with panels of 4- and 6-inch square mesh) set overnight in 119 m (390 ft) of water at the head of the Monterey Submarine Canyon (lat 36°48'N, long 12r48'W). The gill net was retrieved aboard the R/V Orca at 0600 hrs on December 1,1972, and the specimens were transported alive to the laboratory for identification. Prior to preservation, otoliths were removed from two specimens, and the largest individual was photographed (Figure 1). Standard measurements were made on all seven specimens and counts from radiographs of four were made for comparison with published descriptions of the holotype and five other speci- mens collected off southern California. For dorsal and anal fin ray counts, only those rays with an interneural or interhemal were included. Similar counts were Text Appearing After Image: FIGURE 1. These seven specimens, and the otoliths removed from two of them, are deposited in the ichthyology collection of the California Academy of Sciences (CAS 17623).
